Who is a Direct Entry Student?

I have been asked too often who is a Direct Entry student. Well to answer that, let me, first of all, tell you that Direct Entry can also be referred to as DE. The word direct entry is usually used for students/applicants trying to seek admission into a higher institution using a tertiary certification such as an Ordinary National Diploma often referred to as OND or the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE).

In Nigeria, a student who seeks to apply for admission into the university or polytechnic (usually for an HND) will have to possess either an NCE, OND, or an acceptable university foundation diploma. In some cases, HND and B.Sc are also used by Direct Entry students to gain admission into the university for either bachelor’s or master’s degrees. A Direct Entry student is usually excepted to start from 200L as the minimum starting point because they possess additional experience and certification.

To be eligible to be for direct entry, the applicant should have either OND, NCE, or HND as the case may be and determined by the applicant’s preferred institution. The applicant is usually required to register through JAMB and fulfill all other formalities.
